One thing I have learned in Antigua is that many of us don't like to try new things, espeacially, our government.
SteadyJ, I am glad you share the same sentiments! For six years, all I am hearing is screaming and shouting from the government, and nothing to stimulate the economy, which my major concern! More taxes and regulation will not do it for us in A & B! We need a sound and vital economic plan to boost jobs and growth! Can you or anyone tell me what did the "Sunshine" did with all the monies collected from ABST? The fact of the matter is all businesses are suffering, small, medium or large! And, the powers to me just sit around with their arms folded and tight-lipped about our country's future. Instead of going to the defense of T&T PM a week ago, our leader should should be telling the people and businesses that he has a plan to bail them out of their misery! Those who leaves it knows it!

The car dealers in Antigua have been getting away with selling cars at overly high prices for too long. I see cars that go for US$20,000 going for EC$90,000. With the advent of the internet and people now seeing how much these vehicles are being sold for elsewhere I am surprised people are still buying cars in Antigua. Maybe Harney, Hadeed, Ryan & the others should get togther and lower thier prices. I see some of them are already offering free insurance for a year, free licensing & in some cases no money down etc... But all that does not matter if Baldwin & Lovell keep deciding to Jam the people with high taxes, high utilities & low employment. The people wanted UPP again ... well ...
@Dig it, ha ha ha I am from Antigua but i was being a bit sarcastic when I mentioned barrel and cash for clunkers because i know we are not a manufacturing nation but wanted to say at least the USA tried and i do not see our government trying, just taking (sarcasm ha ha ha). The other thing, the dollar barrel is a good idea (brilliant idea) unless what you said is done and enforce meaning, in December, any store that benefit from the Christmas duty free must (by law) significantly lower their prices to ensure that poor people have a great chance of benefiting from this incentive. "Not only should government seek to make money but they should also seek to give it away to the people in a effective longterm nation building fashion" (my way of helping, 2010). There will be some incentives that may not do anything economically (giving the barrel at Christmas gave the Christmas spirit and show the importance of love and giving). Not all things the government should benefit from for us, sometimes it is about intangible things" less crime, the spirit of sharing with the people who made the sacrifices of paying taxes, the people should be rewarded to sometimes.

Just like the Democrats in the US took a lot heat during the midterm election, the UPP will take the blame for the Antiguan economy. All politics is local, and that just the nature of politics. The UPP, and their ardent supports having to stop using old “28 years of ALP”, they should be taking responsibility for their 6 years of governance. Dig it; I totally agree with you that we need fresh new economic thinking with regards to the economic policy in Antigua. In Antigua they we are always seem to be waiting for “foreign direct investment”, which is fine. But, there never seem to be a local government economic stimulus program at all. Tenman, I do listen to Observer every day, and I am frequent emailer to the voice of the people show. Renewable energy is one of the issues that I am particularly passionate about, and the Caribbean region has great sources that could make the region energy independent. But, one of main I see with Antigua is vision, and hence there is no planning.

my way of helping, where are thou from? You said "Have they start to lower taxes, give away money to buy cars (cash for clunkers), dollar barrel to keep money in the hands of people to spend locally (incentives to shop locally locally) and moderately putting cash in the economy (money give away through grants etcetera)." For your information, the "Sunshine" will not do any of the above you mentioned!!! 1) The fact of the matter is taxes and more regulation will continue to go up to meet the government's demand with the IMF. 2) The cash for clunkers doesn't really create economic boom, unless you or others have research to provide. The program in the U.S. was a failure because many of the car dealers weren't getting paid from those sales. 3) I am get to see some form of ecomonic vitality from the governmemt to pump cash into the economy. The saga continues, and instead of pulling together, we are pulling apart. Yet, if wishes were horses beggars who ride!

Tenman, as you know, they are many who are afraid to criticize the ruling government, especially, on this website! You remembered when you and I taught one of them was a ghost worker, since he usually made his posts over the weekend? I guess to clear his name he made a few posts during the week. Personally, I don't care if he is a ghost worker because the opposition is just as guilty in this matter! I do care of how the country is running, and what the government is doing to make people and businesses afloat! The hardship that these car dealers are facing is something the "Sunshine" has blatantly ignored, and now it has creep up on them like jumbie! If consumers can't find work or getting peanuts money every week, how do the government expects them to buy vehicles from the dealers? It's sad to see dealers like Harney facing this economic hardship, when it's our government's duty to make the economy sound for people like you and me to buy a car!

Sadly I believe that their are no creative thinkers in the ministry of finance. They know only the text book of how to raise money and that is by way of taxation and cutting spending. If you tell them that Small Island Economies do not lend themselves for direct taxation cause the base is too small, they don't understand it. We need to stimulate consumption and tax on turnover and not net profit, The 2% tax was not a bad tax at all. It was easy to administer and business people could easily live with it. Ofcourse this new tax system has brought a lot of business for Accountants who are now in great demand to provide financial statements for IRD. Dollar barrel is a big mistake. It encourages capital flight to Puerto Rico or Miami. Why not give a Christmas duty free incentive to the Importers and then they will have a higher revenue on which then you earn tax.

I know some persons get sensitive when the current government gets attacked but they ignore the fact that the UPP is now government and must take responsibility. Obama got a tongue lashing during the last elections and has accepted responsibility for his part in the failure. UPP must do the same. We need a proper transportation system as steady J said yesterday. SteadyJ i did hear what you wrote read on Observer radio. We need to make those making decisions understand that the old patching will no longer work, we need real solutions now. If you remember the creativity of the government program to encourage persons to buy new car and trade in their old for great cash discounts. I know our government cannot do the same, however we have to be creative. Car sales is one of our economic activities. And this one is also dying. However I must also agree with the view from Observer Overseas. Perhaps this is a good time to take another look at our transportation system. Less cars less carbon dioxide in the air.
People who travel to St Marten and Puerto Rico to shop do not count the true cost of their trip. I could drive 30 minutes from my local community and shop saving myself a few dollars on an item. However when you consider the time and gas it takes to go to the other town the price is the same. When we travel to these places we have to pay air fare, hotel, taxi, food and the time it takes you to travel to these places plus the cost to ship them back you might as well shop in Antigua. There is a physiological thinking here that you are getting it cheaper but are you really? Walmart use the phycology of ending their prices with .99 cents.

Maybe the slowdown in vehicle sales is not such a bad thing. At 302 vehicles per 1000 people, Antigua is ranked no. 39 in the world, the highest in the Caribbean and lagging only the major industrialized countries (many of whom manufacture cars) and a few oil producing countries in the middle east. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita.
This is not an accident but the result of consistently bad government policy that places short term government revenue over long term development. For a country the size of Antigua, where it is possible to walk from one end of island to the next in less than 8 hours, it is mind boggling that we should have anywhere near the number of vehicles that we do or or a government that encourages its growth. Only government incentives (duty waiver), artificially low fuel prices, and a banking sector that promotes car purchases above anything else have have made this unsustainable situation to develop. The vehicle sales slowdown should not be viewed simply as a problem but an opportunity.

We need proper transportation system yesterday. Yes, the government will lose some revenue on gas, but I think they could make up that revenue in other areas such as the ABST, because people will have more disposable income to spend on other things. As it stands now, Antiguans spend too much of their small income on energy. (Electricity and fuel) If the government thinks that it will lose all its taxes on fuel, then they are not going to allow Electric Vehicle (EV’s) in Antigua. They will criminalize it as do to solar and wind energy. This is the type of “flat earth” thinking that is holding Antigua back.

There are a few factors attributing here;
The bad economy.
Person s unemployed and cost of living has increased, so less disposable income.
More persons are buying used vehicles abroad and forgetting the dealers and new vehicles.
The duty on vehicles is high yes but when they import used vehicles they also pay the duty but less since the used vehicles cost less.
I am sorry that persons are feeling this pinch now with the bad economy etc. but its teaching people to prioritise, for far too long poor people are caught up with material things and things that do not enrich their lives. Why would a poor person want to change their vehicle every 2 or 3 yrs? Why would someone earning $4k monthly buy a $120k vehicle? For far too long Antiguans been living above their means.

steadyj, well said. I have also heard Collin Sampson (observer Radio) advocating what you posted. We need a proper transportation system. The problem however is too many persons benefit from the current inefficient system, a major one being the government. Think of the revenue they will lose from fuel if we had such a system. This is one of the reasons why we have no alternative energy power plants because government sees those options as taking away the revenue it gets from fuel.

I've been reading some threads about the vehicles cost being too high due to duties, for instance. however I'd like to make a note of a situation that I've seen in the Bahamas. The island of New Providence, which is the home of the capital, Nassau, is about the same size of Antigua alone. They have a policy where basically anyone can import vehicles and resell them, and they made the care reasonably affordable initially for the consumer. The problem that now lies in Nassau, is that for an individual who lives in Clarks Hill, will have to leave their home at no later that 6 - 6:30am to travel to work, lets say to Michale's Mount. Should that individual leave out later than this time they will spend at least 2 hours in traffic. This is the honest truth. The same this occurs on the commute home also.
Therefore these care dealers along with the Ministry will have to think very carefully on the way forward on this matter. hopefully someone will be able to come up with a feasible solution to the problem.
Additi onally, from an environmental point, maybe the dealers should also look for a way to bring in the most environmentally type vehicles, on a quota

The high cost of cars in Antigua can be attributed to the ludicrously high levels of Tax applied to importing vehicles by the UPP government. Similarly the 30% of the population being unemployed is as a direct result of the UPPs failed policies.
Inter national investment in Antigua has dried up as a result of the government's expropriation of land and assets, it's failure to adhere to Antigua's own laws and the suppression of information, a prime example being the report into the FSRC.
