The Coast Forced to Close

The Coast Antigua St John's - One of Antigua's popular entertainment spots, The Coast Nightclub, has closed its doors. Its management has blamed the economy as one of the culprits.

General Manager Doyle Carter said the downtown nightclub experienced severe difficulties over the past year, and management had to make the tough decision to close.

"We were first affected by the decision of the police commissioner to enforce the archaic laws regarding to opening of taverns (nightclub)," Carter said.

"We protested publicly to the actions of the police because we felt that the law was being enforced selectively. We say that because while we were forced to close, others were allowed to remain open. Thus, between December 2010 and March 2011, we saw a significant drop in our revenues."

He also complained that the newly-built ferry dock significantly affected business. He said portions of the area normally allocated for parking were cordoned off as part of the construction area, leaving little space for parking and other activities.

"For example, many people would drive by to investigate whether or not we had activities underway at the nightclub, but they were unable to do so because of the fences erected by the contractors," he said.

According to the general manager, the poor state of the economy had the greatest impact on the business. "People just do not have the money they used to have to spend on entertainment," he said. "We have tried a number of cost-cutting measures, including staff reduction and eliminating some of our operating expenses. Despite these measures, however, we were unable to cover our fixed costs."

At its peak, the Coast employed 30 people. There were also people who provided ancillary support such as cleaners, garbage collectors, and security.

Carter said it is tough to have to put people on the breadline, but the decision affects him as well, as he too is now unemployed.

Tourism Product

There is no need for any flippancy, restaurants and night clubs are all an interval part of what is termed as the Tourism Product. When Booking Agents, who themselves visit this medium, become aware of these closures, they sit up and take note. Their job is to sell the idea to those whose who enquire about Antigua as a holiday destination, is to enlighten them about what kind of entertainment are available. Such as the Coast, it allows the trickle down effect to those without Hotels in the economy. The closure of this establishment is not only a lost to management and workers, but to our Country's tourism as well.
Let the Caribbean arising begin and bring the people changes!

So sorry to hear about the closer of the Coast nightclub. Whenever I travel to Antigua the Coast has always been on my itinerary, not only for their food & music, but the buzz of the crowd as well; however, when I visited last August, I was surprised to see around half-a-dozen patrons in attendance (and half of those were staff - with one using a laptop) and there was no food available and the atmosphere was awful. suffice to say, I didn't stay long.

Last summer when I visited the “Coast nightclub” I was shocked to see how much the place had gone down in 5 years. When I was on the island in 2006, it was a cool place to have lunch in the day or hangout at nights. I am sorry to see the place close and people losing their jobs, but base on what I saw last summer, I would not have gone back to this establishment.

The only night clubs in Antigua that thrive irrespective of the state of the economy are the ones down hatton, the other on popeshead street and the other up cassada gardens. Maybe the outgoing managment of coast can review these establishments business model.
