The Epicurean Spreads Its Wings

The new EpicureanDurimg a short, intimate ceremony on Wednesday, owners and well-wishers marked the opening of the new Epicurean Fine Foods and Pharmacy on Friar’s Hill Road.

The supermarket, which has for years been associated with the Woods Mall, is nowjust a stone’s throw from its former location.  General Manager Richard Buoni gave attendees a quick glance through The Epicurean’s journey to date, from the early days on Old Parham Road, to the opening of the Jolly Harbour branch, and Wednesday’s unveiling.

After the ribbon was cut by Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack, the small crowd was invited inside for refreshments and a tour of the new building. The 90,000 sq ft site boasts a 278-vehicle parking lot, and 20,000 sq ft of second-storey office space in addition to a bakery, pharmacy, flower and gift basket area, and seafood and deli counters. The seafood counter will provide, among other items, fresh fish, lobster, and sushi. The new Epicurean

Along with lots of extra elbow room, shoppers at the new facility will have a one-of-a-kind experience; walking along the frozen food aisle will trigger special motion sensors which will illuminate the long line of freezers.  Another new feature, small but equally worthy of being mentioned, is the supermarket’s quest to join the rest of the world in its “going green” initiative.  In doing so, they will be using 100% biodegradable shopping bags.

Answering inquiries on possible future plans for his business and the use of the old Epicurean space at Woods Mall, owner Jean Beaulieu said he plans to convert the former supermarket into a small department store.

Thierry-Lazarus
Representing Scotiabank, with whose help Beaulieu was able to see his dream of a new building come to pass, Country Manager Marlon Rawlins expressed the bank’s contentment with the outcome of their partnership.

The newly opened Epicurean Fine Foods and Pharmacy houses over 20 aisles and 16 cashier lanes.  Offering more than just groceries, the bakery will supply wedding cakes, local bread, and pastries.  Lasagna, cottage pies, saltfish pastries, hot dogs, and hamburgers will be among the foods available in the deli area. Thierry Lazarus will be in charge of this section of the supermarket, with assistance from other local chefs.

My point is this why must all investment be from abroad? So you want to tell me that nooooooooooo locals have any good business ideas? even if they need help setting up and refining their business proposals im sure their are many locals who have been denied loans to start businesses many times.

Also don't be fooled these foreign investors pay little and nothing in the way of taxes, business rates and concessions to operate in our sweet island paradise.

This new supermarket is definitely needed and obviously wanted - the place has been open 1 week and is still really busy. I also like that there is an alternative, 1st choice - everyone needs to stop being so negative, like someone else said earlier, you don't have to shop there, if people are so concerned about the 'local' businesses, support them instead.

Preoccupation with irrelevant issues

#24 Lester » 2010-08-02 21:28

Why do we have this preoccupation with one's place of birth? Who cares where the owner was born? He invested in Antigua and gave several families jobs! Would you prefer he take his money to St.Kitts? There are several islands anxious to take investors that we ha** away!
Love him or hate him, Stanford raised the stakes in Antigua and gave all of us a measure of excellence to aspire to. I am not debating his personality or whether or not he is a scoundrel, I am observing how undeveloped Antigua & Barbuda would be without investments from abroad.

I love the new store. I think it is a first class operation. I only wish they would allow entry and exit from any door!

sweetness, even in the US they complain about the big supermarket chains. I have seen documentaries that show (argue) how places like Walmart have destroyed existing small businesses and in some instances communities. My hope is the larger size will bring lower prices. Yes some small businesses will die but other more competitive businesses will be created because of the savings brought about by these larger supermarkets

i dont understand why when someone does good to better the living on antigua, some people have to be so senseless. now we believe in democracy. Mr. B decided to expand and enhance his business. no one is holding a gun to our heads to agree or disagree with his plan nor is no one pulling us to go and shop at his supermarket. it is so strange and funny that when we o the the USA and go into the supermarkets we say oh Antigua need to adapt to this and do this and that and now someone is putting his busiiness at a higher level we still complain. if you dont want to shop there just don't, simple. some of our local business people out there does not provide quality foods, the supermarkets are not smelling very good, everyhing is packed up in boxes here and there, u can hardly walk through the aisle......come on man......this has been long awaiting...kudo s to Mr. B for what he has been doing and continue to do.....

Stop complaining

#20 Antiguan » 2010-07-29 13:45

Some small Business appears to be small only because of size, simply because some of these Business owners are interested in one thing and one thing only, and that's to get rich.Of course everyone goes into business to make money, but in doing so, you should give something back to the community, thinking that Epicurean will put some smaller establishments out of business,is like saying that we should just stay stagnant support these small business, which in fact sometimes have already raked in tons of money, but are just satisfied to remain mediocre, they really do not care to help in anyway to develop our Infrastructure, all they do is sit and watch they money, when will we move away from thinking that Less is enough? Antigua needs to be taken to the next level in terms of infrastructural devl, and we should appreciate anyone who is willing to help us get there, even if they are from Tim Buctoo.

Nice, lovely, yada, yada. What nincompoop gave planning permission for that facility to be along a one lane road? Traffic on Friars Hill Rd is not congested enough?

I support the expansion of Epicurean; it is something Antiguans can be proud of. However, I can see where Ah Wah Yah is coming from. The expansion of Epicurean should also help other small businesses that supply them to improve and get their fare share of the business. With regards to the bakeries, Epicurean is now baking bread also and only provides a smaller area than the older epicurean to display their products; it is about 50% smaller. In addition to that, they are now only allowed to deliver once a day, when before they were able to deliver twice three times a day especially on weekends. So the expansion has not helped the smaller businesses that have supported Epicurean for so many years; it could cause some to go out of business due to significantly reduced sale. Epicurean should keep to what they are good in and is providing variety.

To "been there"

#15 imported antiguan » 2010-07-29 08:12

The parking for the last Epicurean was for the entire Woods Mall. The parking for the new Epicurean is only for the supermarket. Today was an exceptions because EVERYBODY WAS THERE checking the place out! Once things settle down it will work out fine. There will be plenty parking for the supermarket clientele, unless there's a hurrican looming, then it will be a madhouse again. I was a little disappointed with the fact that I could not find the recyclable shopping bags anywhere, and they are still giving the plastic bags for free. Mr B should be more aware of what keeps this country afloat and why we're still on the map in the tourism market. Plastic just ain't good enough anymore and people need to learn to take their own recyclable bags to the supermarkets, if not, pay for the plastic!

#14 tenman » 2010-07-29 07:55

As others have said we can't stay stagnant. Others will follow what Epicurean did and do better. However for personal reasons, simply do not like who the owner is, I will do my best to stay away. Its all part of my efforts to be careful of who I empower with my funds.

#13 realist » 2010-07-29 07:21

at those who don't think Antigua gets anything from this new supermarket, answer me this?

How many ppl does the business employ? i would guess easily a few hundred.
How many local families depend on salaries paid to workers who are employed there? easily tripple that of the first question.
How many ppl did the business hire to construct the building? had to be close to 100
How many sub contracted business also worked on the building? plumbers, electricians, painters, sign suppliers etc..
How many other supermarkets, with the exception of first choice hire as many ppl as Epicurean? None!
so jus think before you speak!

Needs more parking

#12 Been There » 2010-07-29 04:44

Ok... this is the problem I had with the last Epicurean, which made me stop going for months, and found an alternative to shop. The parking! I completely hated the way persons would cut across you to get into a parking space and give you curse words on top of that! Or you had to circle for minutes on end just trying to find a spot. So I stopped going. It wasn't worth it.

So they open this new one... I go to see. And inside reminds me so much of supermarkets in Florida where I used to live. Wonderful. Beautiful. But... the parking, again. The parking lot was FULL and I mean FULL, with cars parked on the road. Now I know its opening day, and the traffic will be brisk, but from history, I want to believe that it is going to be busy all the time as the old supermarket was.

More planning should have been put in place for more parking spaces. To me, the lot looks even smaller than the old one.

That is my biggest peeve! If they planned that properly, I would be an extremely happy customer and would once again visit often. Now, I will only go as necessary.... again.

Fine foods

I should have the right to choose whether I want fine dining or local food. I like local food but i prefer fine dining. Why limit my choices. Great going Epicurean.

Although i normally agree with your comments, this one i beg to disagree, this is 2010, why do we always have to think that we should stay behind? It is not enough anymore to think that Sea& Sand is enough to attract, Antigua needs to be modernized in every sector, not just for for tourism but for the comfort of us the nationals, we may even be able to bring back home some of our people, why should we always have to jump on a plane to see something that dazzles our eyes, as far as i can see people spend they money where they have comfort& quality, if the others feel threatened, they can always step up to the plate, sometimes thats how Development happens. I always shopped at Epicurean and will continue to do so.

Devistation

#6 lionman » 2010-07-29 02:03

Antiguans want to do what Europeans do and eat what they eat. We have much better and healthier eateries owned by Antiguan born citizens. Where do you think this money they make from you guys go. It goes right back to their homeland instead of investing it into the Antiguan communities. Everybody want to follow the Westernize way of life you go learn your lesson when it destroy you the same way it is destroying the minds of our youths.

Keep an eye on this one

#4 Ah Wha Ya » 2010-07-29 00:04

This new mega supermarket will destroy other locally owned businesses. Bargain Center, Food Fantasy, First Choice and a sleuth of others will soon reel under the newness of this one. Bakeries likeBrownies, Time Rite etc will lose a major market which could spell their death knell.

Antigua n shoppers when was the last time you heard John Beaulieu sponsor anything in this country? It is time we start to support those who support local organizations and efforts. I am not in any way suggesting a boycott of this new supermarket, but instead just suggesting that we demonstrate sophistication and protect our own interests.
