An additional 42 security officers from the St John’s Development Corporation successfully completed the Basic Training in Security Programme offered by Special Security Services in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour. Their graduation ceremony was held on April 9.
This followed Minister of Labour Dr Errol Cort's announcement several months ago that the security company would train and certify personnel. SJDC took advantage of this opportunity and officers benefitted from the free training.
Dr Cort called on other statutory corporations to partner with Special Security Services to bring a higher level of professionalism, skills and knowledge to their security units. The graduates were admonished to see their role as one of the most important in any establishment and the country as a whole, particularly at Heritage Quay, a major tourist area.
Senator Anthony Stuart, executive director of the SJDC, noted that the corporation has stopped referring to its officers as "guards" as it seeks to instill in its officers an appreciation for the higher call of duty. He called on the officers to use this training in their professional development in the corporation as a whole, and not restrict themselves to the security unit.
Special Security Services' Human Resource Manager Simon Leonard said the company is committed to training anyone interested in security as a profession.
The graduates were also addressed briefly by Labour Commissioner Hesketh Williams, Chairman of the SJDC Lenworth Johnson, and Assistant Personnel Manager for the Corporation Lionel Nedwell. Johnson noted that the training was timely, as the Corporation looks to implement and enforce the pending Heritage Quay Regulations.
