Antigua St. John's - Two employees of the Central Marketing Corporation (CMC) were almost evicted, after management acted upon a verbal mandate that the two appeal for part time work with the Corporation due to financial constraints, even after being on staff for seven months and 16 months respectively.
The move resulted in a slowdown in operations at CMC as other employees who observed the situation sought to protest in solidarity.
Information gathered at the location on Friday morning suggested that both employees manned the cash registers on the lower floor of the Corporation.
General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Free Trade Union Stafford Joseph, who represents the workers, explained that management of CMC failed to meet legal requirements when it did not write to the two individuals as mandated to confirm or deny their status of employment following the mandatory probation period.
He said it was only in January that both employees were informed of the management’s decision to sever their current “unofficial” employment status and possibly re-hire them on a part time basis.
The proposal was met with resistance by the employees who contended that they were already full time employees with the Corporation entitled to full benefits wages.
