Security Chief Responds to Non-Payment Allegations

CEO Peter MurphyAntigua St. John's - Up to 10 employees of Guardian Security may face layoff on Friday - and at least one may be fired. So says CEO Peter Murphy, responding to media queries relating to reports of late payment.

On Wednesday, one of the unpaid employees informed Caribarena that a group had not been paid for over a month, this while the CEO was in Miami.

Murphy said he returned to Antigua on July 24 and has since been running back and forth to the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) to secure a new checkbook in order to pay the staff.

He said to date most security officers have been paid, and that a dozen or so remain in arrears as a result of the checkbook issue, coupled with the fact that some four clients stand in default because “their accountants are on holiday.”

“There was an issue with a checkbook that we are waiting to collect from the bank which is out of my hands. And there is the matter of money not coming in on time from clients … as the money comes in we pay the staff … I’m waiting for checks to come in," Murphy explained.

The clearly annoyed security head, demanded that Caribarena supply the identity of the individual who exposed the delinquency - and when that request was denied, he vowed to suspend all those who are still awaiting payment as early as Friday August 3.

“Someone is going to get laid off for sure. I’m overstaffed as it is and here I am trying to keep people employed in this economy and this is what they do? I am very ruthless to things like that. I need to set a precedent,” he declared.

Murphy has nonetheless given assurances that as soon as the checkbook is made available the staff would be paid, utilising funds usually reserved for other purposes.

A staff meeting is to be held today.

How many of these hardline persons commenting and passing judgement here ever managed a business or even created and idea that employed people. Then you would also know that you are married to your own company. Anyone with this responsibility cannot sleep well at night. Here is a simple measure. How long has Mr Murphy ran his company? Now how many months has this worker not been paid? I'm sure Murphy is embar**ed as hell but the worker will be paid. Sometime we over react. How many of you ever paid back every loan on time. I'm sure Antigua have much bigger issues.

#19 Hothead » 2012-08-04 10:08

Looking at all theses hits that hyou all are putting on thisstory it surely shows that right noe Mr. Murphy is more poupular than one of the local politicians Mr. Robin Yearwood.
However, all u people are making negative comments do you know what is really going on in the man business no you do no so you all need to ** down and shut the hell up. A staff going not gttn paid ontime I can understand that but when a staff goes and says that he have not been paid for a mnth that is just wrong because I no that is a lie./ We are all big ppl no need to scandalize the man name and say he is ridiculous and all these crap, and he is putting the blame on everybody. When you know the true facts then come back and start talking until then shut u all damn mouth.

#18 Dig It » 2012-08-03 16:02

SlyThatGuy, I made a "promise" to Eric to not get involved in our "politricks" until after Carnival. However, please help me to "understand" your last sentence in your post! Are you inferring that this "nincompoop" CEO should exercise his authority in "firing" employees (not sure how overstaffed he is or if he is using it as an excuse?) Because they are "ungrateful" in calling him out? Sly, until then, I will give you the benefit of doubt but my hand is "itching" me at the same time, as I can't see any "genuine" effort by Mr. Murphy in "correcting" the problem at hand!

Put him in the Hall of Shame!!!!!!

#17 Dig It » 2012-08-03 15:07

First of all, it is a shame that this is Carnival, and these security employees are "unpaid" over a month! Mr. Murphy's "excuses" for getting "checkbooks" to pay his employees is one of the most "lamest" excuse I ever heard! And, he has the friggin "gall" to ask CA for the employee who discloses such information to them on his "delinquent" ways in paying his staff! Is the CEO "asinine" or what? If he is so "ruthless" in retaliating his staff, imagine what he would have done in finding the person who exposes him and the company? Do we really want CEOs like Mr Murphy running a company in this country? I am of the view that this CEO should be not only "fired" but also put in the "Hall of Shame!"

...if and only if, then

#16 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-08-03 14:56

If and only if, the government pays the políce on time, in order to boost their moral, then they, the police could work more diligently to reduce the crime rate, thus illiminating the need for company's like his, if and only if it's that simple.
On the other hand, his public statements as the CEO of a company are discriminatory and to echo previous bloggers, DO YOUR JOB, LABOUR DEPARTMENT, or are they afraid they'll be fired by King BS, for adhering to the laws of the Nation...
GET UP STAND UP, STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS, DON'T GIVE UP THE F FIGHT....

Hello. It's not Mr. Murphy alone. PLENTY of this BS is going on in Antigua. PLENTY. Try working for someone who cuts your paycheck and expects you to still work 100% of hours.

Security Chief Responds To Non Payment Allegations

#13 Anu » 2012-08-03 12:50

Mr Murphy is a heartless individual. His draconian statement is coming at a time when Antigua celebrates another year of emancipation from slavery. Mr Murphy must take into consideration that his workers also have financial commitments and working for minimum a wage salary, i am sure they are not previlaged to have suffice financial savings to pick up the slack until they are paid. Since Mr Murphy is aware of the tough economic time in Antigua, this should be the time for him to show some empathy towards his employees. I am sure he is in a position to make some sort of part payment on their salaries until his clients update their debts to him. Because of the way he chooses to resolve the problem, I can't help but to wonder what percentage of these unpaid employees are non-nationals since they often falls prey to be victims of exploitation by their employers. The Labour department needs to conduct a thorough investigation into this case and cases like these. Employers like Murphy must not be allowed to get away with actions of this nature.

#11 It Is Me » 2012-08-03 09:42

Did the Labour Minister or the local unions get a load of his comment? He said ..."he will suspend everyone waiting payment" ... just because one of them decided to mention they did not get paid yet he is gonna punish everyone because one of them went to the media.

Is he a slave driver? Someone need to reign that man in. I know people are desperate for work but that is more than desperation to work for someone like that!!!

Why doesn't a big company like that have over draft with his bank ... he has to wait for people to pay him to pay his workers after being in business for so long!!! And then how long does it take to get a new check book and when did your accountant realise that the checkbook was going to be finished? At the last check? What a bunch of crap!!!

This man must be xxxy, but this does NOT surprise me one bit. Some employers are x of employees in these "tough economic times"
I guess the CEO is adapting this Baldwin Spencer-esque attitude because he thinks that he is doing his employees a favour by even employing them. This makes me sick to my stomach :-x Slavery days coming back? I hope not.

Audley Dave Joseph, well said. The guy in on a power trip. Its the fault of everything else except him, the accountant on holiday, he needs a check book, the understandable client (tends mostly to be government) has not paid. I know of no bank, which would not provide a temporary cheque book to clients. There is the added option of having his bank write cheques for whomever he instructs them to. In addition, there is still something called cash. He should simply man up and apologize to his employees but that would mean showing them respect which he seems to lack

The Government paying its employees late has long been standard practice for many years in this country. This is just the nature and culture of how it goes about business dealing with its employees. The problem,as you might agree with me, is in urgent need of correction. If the problem stems from having too many employees, then it's best to cut some of them - This simply cannot continue.

Tough Leadership!

#2 Jerome » 2012-08-03 06:35

I respect Managers like Mr Murphy and others who try to keep their business alive in this tough economy, and have to still defend themselves against lying and undermining employees, who give the wrong impressions! It is soo easy to cast blame on others and not see the faults within ourselves! Do what you have to do Murphy!

In my opinion, this is what happens when there is an inefficient Labour Department. How long have the public been hearing the different trade unions crying for help from the labour department to simply do what the law requires? Now this ** believe he can fire people because they talk for what is rightfully theirs. Lord Have Mercy!!
