Business Community Demands Apology

Business Community Demands ApologyAntigua St John's - Comments made by newly appointed parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Health, Senator Malaka Parker, have drawn the ire of the head of one of the country’s leading business organisations.

Last Thursday, Senator Parker made brief remarks at a debate held to mark World Consumers’ Rights Day, during which she noted that the function was sparsely attended, and in her view, “if the occasion was one where the debate was ‘how to find new ways to rob the consumer,' the place would be packed full and overflowing”.

But President of the Antigua Employers Federation Acres Stowe took issue with Senator Parker, calling on her to retract her comments and offer an apology to the business community.

“At first, I was extremely disappointed and appalled by Senator Parker’s comments, especially in her area of responsibility, she would have had opportunity to discuss and have a broader perspective. But I hope that on reflection, she would take the comments back,” Stowe said on Observer Radio.
He said his interpretation of the comments was that the business community was a group of opportunists and con artists.

“In my mind, when she said if the debate was on ‘how to find new ways to rob consumers,’ the place would be packed and overflowing, suggests that we are opportunists," Stowe said. "She also said that is why financial services, retail outlets, and other outlets are able to ‘skillfully con us at times,’ and that this suggests that the business community comprises con artists."

He called on Senator Parker, who was making her first public statement since her recent appointment, to issue an apology to the business community. “I really think that Senator Parker needs to apologise to the business community for these obviously ill-thought out statements, as this is certainly not the way to begin to encourage a mutual relationship between consumers and the business community,” he added.

On the issue of the new taxation on allowances and benefits, Stowe said he was disappointed that the government appears to have no other option but to introduce the new taxes. “We are disappointed that in an already struggling economy, the government appears to have little option but to put additional burden on disposable income,” he said.

He said notwithstanding this, a number of business entities, including the Federation, the Antigua Chamber of Commerce, the Bankers’ Association and the Antigua Business Alliance had been having consultation with the government to arrive at a "less Draconian package that will have no impact on low income earners, and little impact on middle income earners".

The Federation president said his major concern is for taxpayers to see tangible evidence that their tax dollars are properly spent in terms of infrastructural improvements and better services.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Full Disclosure - know nothing of the Good Senator's Background, Education & Motivations. Have seen and heard her utterances in the "Chamber of Sober Second Thought" not in any of the "Echo Chambers" which proliferate on this "small place" and SIDS. Poodle, got your point on the Facebook Moment. Show our youth Faith, Hope & Charity. Quote:
My world it moves so fast today The past it seems so far away And I squeeze it so tight,(Jobs Jobs) I can't breathe And every time I try to be What someone has thought of me So caught up, I wasn't able to acheive But deep in my heart the answer it was in me And I made up my mind to find my own destiny I look at my environment And wonder where the fire went What happened to everything we used to be I hear so many cry for help Searching outside of themselves Now I know His strength is within me And deep in my heart the answer it was in me And I made up my mind to find my own destiny

I find myself having to agree with what MAX HURST said on observer last week. Although Ms. Parker is a young intelligent young lady but could benfit from higher education. I have have observed that many of her conclusions are based on her perception and not on any established model or research, higher education will certainly give her a different perspective.

Grossly offensive and provocative comments

#25 CLASSICUS » 2012-03-19 20:48

The good Senator might have spoken out against the inferior quality goods being imported from China and are being dumped on consumers.

The best thing she might have done would have been to call upon her government to tighten the screws that consumers might be protected from the Chinese business people who are choking off the local businesses.

Accusing the local business people of being likely rip off artistes was grossly offensive and provocative.

#23 The Real Senator » 2012-03-19 18:34

this senator is full of crazy statements ... I was amazed when in her first Parliamentary debate she started talking about things that supposedly happened 30-50 years ago before she was even born!!! But she came in the parliament with "her facts" of what happened in Antigua & Barbuda before she was even born ... my take on everything ... She was singing for her supper a LONG TIME NOW!!!

I can't wait for the day that this senator would be put on a ticket for the UPP. They seem to have allot of "hope" for her. It shows how they are not in touch with the average person on the ground nowadays. she might be popular in a few UPP circles ... but I dare them to try her!!!

It is a sad day when people who are raping / robbing our treasury (by having multiple political jobs) can now come and have THE NERVE to talk about people "robbing consumers". All I could do is ...LOL...

I must tell the good senator that I am sure if they had that meeting Between 2004-2010 it would have been full ... if she can't see that the handwriting is on the wall for her government then I guess she will have to wait for election day to get the picture!!!

Senator Parker was out of order to make such insinuations on the entire business community....On e really has to wonder if this was an error, or if perhaps this was done on purpose in order to test the response and resolve of the private sector.

PLM,
The idea that business people are interested in robbing people is more than unfortunate. Business people in this country work hard and sacrifice to achieve. It is insensitive for Ms. Parker to make such statements.

Poor Mr. Acres Stowe, he has no choise but to answer but he is also an employee. The employers federation is mainly made up now of employees who cannot force the UPP or the good senator to do anything. They have to go back to their bosses or boards for any move to be made so they are like bank managers can't give you a loan without checking with head office. Mr. Ryan from Brysons is in the same position except he has to sing for his supper and Mrs. Peters from the chamber is a UPP Operative. So the government and their ministers are free to take the privite sector to pieces. The question is how do we respond?

PLM, you are doing an injustice to Ms. Parker. Ms Parker is dead wrong and you are crowning her. That is how children go a stray. That is also why the UPP is in the state it is in.

Senator Parker, according to the article, this was your first public statement in your new role. I can assure you that your comments were not a good way to make friends and influence people.

Perhaps harshly said and more decorum could have been used by Senator Parker but her statement are true nonetheless. May I suggest that the next session be titled..."Maxim um Yield from the impulsive consumer"

#3 POODLE » 2012-03-19 07:10

I think Senator Parker should be looking to protect the consumers from things like bleaching cream and other adverse over the counter drugs before publicly causing the Government embar**ment by putting her foot in her mouth!

Stowe won't get an apology! In any case he doesn't deserve one! Notice he says his organization is concerned about how the Government spends the Taxes? Why didn't he make an uproar with the Romantic Rhythms, Fences, Generators etc...when he should have? Too late to talk about that now...too much water under the bridge!

#1 Taxed Out » 2012-03-19 06:21

I understand the Hon.Malaka Parker's comment ...there are con artist out there but not all are the buisiness people. For example, there was an employee of a financial institution who kept saying they were sick when they attended work ...people say nothing go so and that they were really conning the financial institution out of their money. So i say that to indicate that con artist exist among employees, business persons and consumers alike! ...Hon. minister wouldn't you agree? :D
