PM Attends LIAT Shareholders Meeting

PM Attends LIAT Shareholders MeetingAntigua St. John’s – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Minister of Tourism, John Maginley, are currently in Barbados attending a meeting of the Majority Shareholders of LIAT.

Along with the other Majority Shareholders  Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Freundel Stuart, Q.C., Prime Minister of Barbados, PM Spencer will discuss a number of issues important to LIAT at this juncture in the airline’s history.

High on the meeting’s agenda is the destruction of the hangar at the V.C. Bird International Airport on June 10. The leaders are also looking at a number of presentations for the reconstruction of the said hangar along with a new office block which was also destroyed by fire.

It is also anticipated that the major shareholders will be considering recommendations to remove non-profitable routes from LIAT’s itinerary and the status of the current fleet of the airline.

LIAT’s Chairman Dr. Jean Holder and its CEO Mr. Brian Challenger will also present reports.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with the Chairman, Board of Directors and Management on Friday, the shareholders made several major decisions regarding the Company’s re-fleeting plans.

Speaking at a press conference following the meeting, Dr. Gonsalves said the Company has completed its analysis and evaluation of the proposals submitted by aircraft manufacturers.

Based on recommendations from the Board of Directors and Management, the three prime ministers unanimously decided on one aircraft type to renew LIAT’s aging fleet. However, they decided to defer the decision regarding other aircraft types to allow certain matters to be explored.

It is anticipated that these decisions will be made in the short term.

“The Company will now proceed to discussions with the manufacturer of the first type selected. The discussions are intended to consummate in an agreement for the acquisition of new aircraft for the airline,” dr Gonsalves said.

“For a number of reasons, we do not wish to declare just which aircraft type has been chosen. It would also be inappropriate at this stage before discussion with the manufacturers to give an indication of the decision of the Company in the selection of an aircraft type,” he added.

LIAT anticipates that these negotiations would commence immediately and proceed swiftly and soon thereafter a formal announcement will be made regarding the selection.

Personally I think it is a waste of time to send this clown anywhere to discuss anything! He might recommend that LIAT buy old Chinese air-planes!

Let us hope that the Administration has recommended Brazil' s Embraer Aircraft and that The Board and Major Shareholder Governments approve.

That is exactly the point. The shareholders can fire the board, but nothing else. They don't set policy. And don't decide on policy decisions.
That is the task of the Board of directors

Well said - I agree with you for the most part. However, I believe that in a big corporation, the management team runs the day to day operations. The Board of Directors oversees and selects the management team and oversees their operations. The shareholders select the Board of Directors.

So who are the players, i.e., the shareholders, board of directors and management team?

"A meeting of the 'majority shareholders'" - what does this mean?

Is Antigua the majority shareholder and are the other two minority shareholders?
Why are the shareholders determining what plane to buy? Did the management team recommend to the Board of Directors what plane to buy?

Not clear who is running LIAT

#3 Observer » 2012-07-21 12:53

In a normal corporation structure a company is run by its Board of Directors with at the the Head a Chairman. With Liat I constantly hear that the shareholders are running the show. If that is the case then management can not be held accountable for their action as the Shareholders are involve in the management decission. This is very odd. Shareholders are only liable for up to their share capital. Should not have any management decission to make. Can elect to vote the board out at special meetings. Why are we doing things so upside down and yet expect the same result as in the private business.

I will not be surprised to see the Prime Ministers vote to get an aircraft from a manufacturer in China while Chinese airlines continue to purchase aircraft from Europe, North America and Brazil.
