Art student Octavia Bostwick recently graduated from Christ The King High School. Caribarena.com had a talk with her about her work, and how she plans to include it in her future career choices.
Bostwick always had an interest in art, but never really pursued it until fourth form. “It was challenging at first, like the other students would sometimes draw something in much less time than I would, but when the teacher began to show me certain techniques I grasped the concept eventually,” she said. “For one of my SBA’s theme was ‘Internal,’ and I did a special piece involving the skull which was quite unique. I think I’ve come a long way.”
Speaking of unique, she said she likes to paint unique pieces, and not just the usual stuff like nature trails, roses, flowers, waterfalls etc. “I mean I’ve done some paintings involving flowers and bees under the theme ‘Fascination’ - this piece really shows depth, appreciation and expression, it was really wonderful.”
The time it takes to paint depends on the subject she's working with. The skull piece took a little more time than usual, as there was quite a lot going on.
Although Bostswick wants to be a lawyer, she wants to keep her art alive, doing it part-time, and so she has decided to pursue further courses in the field.
“There are other areas of art like print making and ceramics that I also have an interest in,” she said. “I think visual arts should be taught in school from an early age. It brings out creativity, it relaxes you, and it’s a skill you can go far with, making it your career choice. You can do paintings for people, and sell them at a good price if they are really, really good.”
Bostwick has entered the annual Bank of Antigua Christmas Card Competition, and was adjudged one of the finalists. She also placed second in the Public Library Visual Arts Competition. She also had a hand in the aquatic wall painting at Yasco Sports Complex.
