Gonnella On Exhibit at Art Ridge

Naydene Gonnella exhibitionAntigua St John's - Art At The Ridge’s exhibition in March 2012 will feature internationally-known artist Naydene Gonnella.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Gonnella moved to the Caribbean in the 1990s.  She has lived in Antigua for the past decade, having trained in art at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) University in the figurative discipline, which included a final year in Florence, Italy, where she focussed on the theme of doorways.

Doors have now become signature pieces for Gonnella, for which she is well-known both in Antigua and internationally.

She enjoys painting outdoors and uses pastels, oils, and acrylics to create original works of art. Her current paintings are an exploration into human emotions. While capturing her subjects with an agitated sensitivity, she exposes her command of the medium and expressive quality.

The artists said, “My paintings investigate perception, how the observed world and painted surface can shift. I usually start with an idea and then let the painting take on a life of its own developing intuitively in a process that involves layering and collaging elements and subsequently painting over them.

Through the layers, some parts become obscured, while others bleed through to reveal the process. My medium of choice is a blend of beeswax and oil paint, known as encaustic, which gives a beautiful texture and depth of colour to my work.”

Gonnella has had many solo and group exhibitions, and her work has won numerous awards, including winner of Art At The Ridge’s 2011 Juried Art Exhibition.
