Building a sand castle is one of those activities that you associate with beach life. You only need a few basic implements like a small bucket and shovel to start, but why not get even more elaborate? Experiment with different bucket shapes and sizes. Investigate structural principles by seeing how high and big a castle you can make. Add a bit of color. The sky is the limit.
On the beach at Byron Bay we saw Steve from Sandology making this amazing sand sculpture. The detail was exquisite - we were mesmerised. He had a couple of large buckets with him and now and then would walk down to the ocean and fill one with water. Then he'd shovel in dry sand. To build the castle he dipped into it with both arms, brought out a large handful of sand, positioned it, and held it into place for a few moments while the water drained away. Only after it had sat for a few more moments did he begin sculpting. He had a miniature trowel which he used to cut out the doorways, cut tiny slices off his spheres so they'd sit where he put them, and draw the decorative lines on the towers. He had a soft paintbrush which he used to brush away extra sand, and a plastic tube like a fat straw which he used to blow away excess sand when the brush wasn't any use. Of course, I'm itching to get to the beach and try out a few tricks. Just
one tower would be plenty for me. It's probably way harder than he makes it look.(Fixie Australia)
