A new ferry, Fjortoft, has begun operating between Antigua and Montserrat. The boat was initially supposed to travel between Antigua and Barbuda as well, but that leg has been postponed.
Deputy Chairman of the Barbuda Council Fabian Jones told Caribarena docking problems led to the delay.
He was unable to say when the ferry will be able to make trips to Barbuda because the dock has to be expanded to accommodate it.
Expansion work is to begin shortly.
Council Chairman Kelvin Punter was expected to do a trial run on Wednesday from Antigua to Montserrat.
The ferry, which was sourced by the Antigua and Barbuda Development Bank, is a 101-seater capable of 28 knots.
It has the potential to transport up to 400 people per week with regularly scheduled service, which translates into over 20,000 per year.
The ferry departs Montserrat at 7:30 a.m., arriving in Antigua at 8:45 a.m., and departs Antigua at 5:30 p.m., arriving into Montserrat at 6:45 p.m.
The fare for this ferry service is EC$150.00 for a one-way-trip (US$56).
Children under 12 years old will pay EC$75 one way.
Each passenger is allowed 2 pieces of baggage free of charge and any additional baggage is charged at EC $50.00 per piece.
The ferry departs Antigua from the deep water harbour in St John’s and no advance ticketing is required.
Passengers are asked to check in 90 minutes prior to departure.
Passengers wishing to use the ferry service should contact MONAIR in Montserrat at telephone (664) 491-2533/2362, or Jenny Tours in Antigua at (268) 461-9361.
