Two restaurant employees within the Rex Resorts group have been recognised as employees-of-the-month. Hawksbill’s Myra Burton and Halcyon’s Corlette Thomas were the January winners recently awarded by the management.
Burton, a 13-year veteran in the industry, has been employed at Hawksbill for just over a year, after serving a stint at Blue Heron.
“I feel good about it. I won it previously while I was at Blue Heron," she said. "I enjoy serving the guests. I love to do what I’m doing."
Burton credits her supervisor, Grescilda Bright, as the spark behind her passion.
“She keeps me motivated,” she said, adding that she doesn’t intend to rest on her laurels.
“You never know, I could be the Employee of the Year. Yes, I’m working towards that," she added.
Thomas, who traded her skills as a hairdresser for the dining room, believes she has come a long way during her three years at Halcyon, after she read an ad in the newspaper and did the necessary on-the-job training.
“I was surprised when I was told I won the award. I cried," she said. "I worked hard. It’s good to be recognised."
She said a combination of comments from the guests and the management’s impression helped her win the award.
“I’m always early to work," Thomas added. "I believe the guests' comments were favourable, and I’ve worked hard. It’s just something natural in me to work hard. If you don’t, you put strain on others. I always have the energy to meet guests from different countries such as England, Germany, and Canada."
She harbours high hopes. “I see a future as a manager,” she said.
