Antigua & Barbuda’s sprint sensation Daniel "Bakka" Bailey has won the country’s first medal at a major international event.
In a very tight race, Bailey crossed the finish line in third place for a bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Ahead of him were British sprinter Dwain Chambers, who won in a time of 6.48, the fastest time of the year, and American Mike Rodgers in a time of 6.53 seconds.
Bailey remained steady throughout, managing to hold off American speedster Trell Kimmons, who was right behind him in fourth, edging him out by 0.02 seconds.
It was sweet revenge, as Kimmons had earlier edged him out in the semi-finals.
Bailey, recognizing the achievement for his small nation, which had never really been in the conversation in athletics, said: “I am so excited to put Antigua and Barbuda on the world map of athletics.”
