The government’s initiative to declare all government buildings no smoking zones has received a boost, with the donation of signs by a local media company.
In April, Minister of National Security & Labour and United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for the St John’s Rural East Constituency Dr Errol Cort challenged businesses to prohibit smoking in the workplace, following the example set by King’s Casino.
One month later, the Cabinet officially banned smoking in all government buildings, premises, and vehicles in observance of World No Tobacco Day 2010.
In support of this move, Idea Media on Thursday donated 150 No Smoking signs, in the first phase, to the Antigua and Barbuda Tobacco Free Initiative.
“Today we are here to show our interest in ensuring our nation’s health by answering the call of the Minister of National Security and Labour the Hon Errol Cort in promoting non smoking in all public places in Antigua and Barbuda,” a statement said. "To this end, we at Idea Media are making a donation of 150 signs to be installed firstly in all government buildings and by extension public areas."
“It is our intention to donate 500 non smoking signs and 100 large non smoking posters to the Ministry of Health,” it continued.
Idea Media said it will do its part in realizing the goal, and applauded the ministry's vision to make Antigua & Barbuda a healthier place.
Idea Media specializes in print media advertising and is managed by Winston Henry, who also serves as a UPP resource person in the St John’s Rural East constituency.
