Environmental Cadets are hard at work collecting recyclable material as part of an ongoing competition organised by the Environment Division Education Unit and the Antigua and Barbuda Waste Recycling Company.
So far, they have collected 6,897 lbs of recyclables. Golden Grove Primary School is so far the most enthusiastic primary school, having collected 837 lbs in three months, while the Antigua State College outranks the other schools in its division (secondary and tertiary) after collecting 445 lbs.
Environment Education Officer Arica Hill said at the end of the school year, those who have collected the most recyclables will receive a considerable prize.
She encouraged all the schools to continue to recycle in the coming terms, and to look forward to incentives throughout the year.
Meanwhile, ABWREC manager Carol-Faye George has said the facility in Coolidge can now recycle even more materials, like plastic bottles (PET & HDPE/1&2), aluminium cans, steel tins, vehicular batteries, UPS batteries, PVC cuttings, galvanize cuttings, scrap metals, and toner cartridges. Schools are encouraged to bring in any of these materials, particularly steel tins, which are easily accessible.
The Environment Cadet programme seeks to sensitise children and young adults about the importance of the environment and ways they can preserve and conserve it.
