Under the theme ‘Integrating the Caribbean through Pageantry,’ the Jaycees 48th Annual Caribbean Queen Show promised to be an evening filled with energy, creativity, talent and fun. Held on Friday, July 31st at the Antigua Recreation Grounds, the show began with the contestants first appearing in their national dresses to introduce themselves.
The interview session was the first segment of the night. Miss Jamaica, Katrina Grant, was awarded this segment as she had an excellent response to the question concerning how her country could plan for the possibility of a future food shortage. Her quick, assertive answer also won cheers from the audience.
The next judged segment was swimwear. The ten delegates paraded in a variety of swimsuit designs and colours, customized to fit their specific bodies. Miss St. Lucia, Cathy Daniel, was exquisite in her blue swimwear that perfectly fit her well-toned body and proportionate physique which contributed to her winning this segment. It should also be noted that Miss St. Croix, Sheniqua Robinson’s gymnast body was also well-toned, which was highlighted by her poise.
For the talent section, the audience got a wide variety of performances from the contestants. The Indian dance performance by Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Kelly Babooram, began lovely but ran into a hitch when her top experienced a wardrobe malfunction. Miss Montserrat’s ‘get your luck’ dramatic presentation had the crowd in stitches as she marketed her remedies to give solutions to many life’s problems. Miss Barbados, Miss St. Kitts, as well as Miss St. Vincent & the Grenadines, all gave their best efforts on the songs they performed. Miss Antigua’s dance ‘in the arms of an angel’ was also a crowd favourite. But it was Miss Jamaica who was awarded the talent segment for her portrayal of a single mother in a clinic giving advice on ‘The Strength of a Woman.’
Shelana George, Miss Antigua & Barbuda , was awarded best modeling skills in evening wear as she sashayed and glided across the stage in her gown entitled ‘Return to Innocence.’ All judges voted Miss Jamaica, Miss Congeniality and Miss St. Lucia received the Miss Photogenic prize. The second runner-up position was awarded to the crowd favourite, Miss Jamaica, Katrina Grant, while Dannyele Leslie representing Barbados was first runner-up.
The big winner of the night was Miss Antigua, Shelana George, who captured her second crown in less than a week. Shelana’s consistency on all judged segments ensured her win. As the host country, the pressure was on George to bring home the crown. She said, “I am overwhelmed with joy. I knew that if I stayed focused and maintained a consistent performance that I would do well. I am deeply honoured to be the one to bring the crown back home, and this accomplishment stands as one of my greatest achievements to date.”
