Antigua & Barbuda was featured prominently as one of the region's premier events destination during the recently concluded Carnival celebrations in Trinidad & Tobago.
The Ministry of Tourism launched its regional sales programme with the "…365 reasons for you to Re-Discover Antigua & Barbuda". Two ministry officials - Regional Sales Manager Joyce Henry, and Communications Officer Samoya Kirby - held radio interviews, organised newspaper inserts and presented press kits to revellers in the WEE International Mas Troupe. Trinidad was the launch pad for the Ministry’s audio and print advertisements, which support the regional sales programme.
The WEE International Mas Troupe labeled its 2010 presentation “Treasures of the Caribbean,” in which Antigua & Barbuda was represented in a section entitled Taste of Paradise. All mas players were presented with destination information, souvenirs and specialty items highlighting the uniqueness of the twin-island state and its tourist attractions, including festivals and beaches.
T-Shirt mas was played on Carnival Monday, when masqueraders were dressed in Ministry of Tourism-sponsored Antigua & Barbuda T-shirts. On Carnival Tuesday, it was on to the beautifully orchestrated costume display that symbolized Antigua & Barbuda, “Taste of Paradise”.
“There is no time like the present, since the regional and international audience was focusing on or visiting Trinidad for Carnival; it was the perfect time to host a media blitz, which is one of the most cost effective ways to reach millions of potential visitors," Henry said. "It is expected that this exciting media and advertising campaign is expected to generate an awareness of the destination and to motivate people to visit Antigua & Barbuda."
Henry added that the regional sales plan's strategy is to utilize regional festivals and events as platforms to showcase Antigua & Barbuda while capitalizing on media exposure.
Minister of Tourism John Maginley said, "Despite the economic downturn that is currently being experienced, regional event travel is still thriving and we will to continue to showcase many of the unique 365 activities that can be experienced in Antigua & Barbuda. We are the only Caribbean island with the ability to boast of a beach for each day of the year, and this regional programme will give us the opportunity to highlight the many other tourism products that we have to offer to our visitors, specifically in the form of activities thereby increasing our competitive advantage."
The Ministry is planning to replicate various components of this programme in eight other islands.
